Long Live the Third Pedal!

Fun cars > fast cars

Happy Friday!

In a world of automotive chaos, Porsche continues to lead by example..

Earlier this week, the good folks at Stuttgart revealed the Porsche 911 S/T. A new 911 that looks like all others, and probably drives like them too, but it’s a naturally aspirated sports car with a manual gearbox - and in 2023 that’s just what the world needs (well, that and lower interest rates 😅)

It’s really not a complicated formula - invest in your EVs but keep putting out thrill machines. Mechanical monsters that we can use in years from now to show the younger generation what proper footwork looks like. Even in 2005 Aston Martin realized the Vanquish would age better if a manual conversion kit was offered after production was finished.

Fun cars are greater than fast cars. Kudos to Porsche for keeping that third pedal alive 🤘

Formula 1

Twenty cars & twenty teams?

Now that F1 is on their summer break, allow us to suggest something odd - while everyone is wrestling with the idea of adding an 11th team, we’re thinking - why not have 20 cars and 20 twenty teams?

Wouldn’t it make things more competitive and wouldn’t there be more money/viewership if we had more teams? From a sporting perspective this whole idea of two cars per team is just weird - they’re called teammates but they’re not. They’re independent athletes with independent lives, careers, goals, etc. So why is the sport always dancing around weird political in-fighting, when more teams would do away with all of that nonsense.

It’s not like Lebron practices with the Miami Heat but then plays for the Los Angeles Lakers..

Next race: Sunday, August 27th @ 9am EST (spoiler, Max wins 🤣)

Formula E wants to turn up the volume

Yes, you read that headline right. No, they don’t want to literally turn up the volume as the electric motors powering Formula E cars make more of a sci fi-type of hum than actual noise. What new Formula E CEO Jeff Dodd means is that he wants to make sure everybody knows how competitive the series is.

While Formula E’s raison d'être has and will continue to be sustainability and the promotion of EVs, Dodd wants to make sure that people understand how fast these cars are and how competitive the on-track racing is.

It’s for this reason that at the season-ending London E-Prix, they broke the indoor land speed record by hitting a top speed of 218.71kph using their Genbeta car, a Gen3 race car with a range of modifications to effectively ‘unlock’ the specifications of the GEN3 race car.

When you’re in elite motorsports, everyone wants to see performance improvements. We’re on Gen 3 of the car; we’ll go to Gen 3 EVO within two seasons and then we have Gen 4 coming after that. Each of those steps, I’m looking for improvements in efficiency in the car — its sustainability credentials, but also performance. I want it to be able to go faster, not just from the acceleration point of view, but also top speed. That’s one area we’re focused on.”

While Formula E claims to be the world’s most sustainable sport, they’re also reminding people that it’s also one of the fastest as well. Bring on Gen4.
