And the crowd goes mild! The 2023 Miami GP..
The awkward and awful experience of F1 trying to be cool in the US
Happy Friday!
We’ve scoured the internet for anything positive about the Miami GP but our best efforts have failed us. Last week, the second most viewed GP of all time reminded us why F1 won’t work in the US, at least not in Miami..
Fans online complained that the event pavilions were full of clout chasing brands while the paddock was full of clout chasing social media influencers. The casual fans complained about sitting in the sun to see not much, while the real fans complained that maximum Verstappen is getting boring - but nothing was worse than the driver intros..
The cringe-filled catastrophe was so lame that drivers were running past LL Cool J (lol what was he even doing there) to minimize their awkward moment. The best comment we saw online for that intro portion was “and the crowd goes mild!” 🤣
But that’s just where we are. As the auto industry continues to contract, Formula 1 needs to become really cool, really quick. The US wants rock & roll but motorsports is typically anything but that..
So, here’s some of our solutions to make it work in the US:
Let the drivers speak without lawyers and allow them to have a personality; host a pre-race conference and let them go at it (just look at how great that works in combat sports, shoutout Dana White)
Give the fans more action from the drivers; something non points related where we can enjoy their talents, like a skills contest
Don’t let DJ Khalid or Will I AM anywhere near your event
Alright, now let’s see if Vegas, the fight capital of the world, can work it’s magic..
Formula 1
Watching while racing, only Alonso..
Shoutout Fernando Alonso giving us this moment during the Miami GP. The 2x World Champion was actually watching the race on the big screens as he went around the circuit..
Arguably the best part of the GP, what an absolute legend 🤣
Next race: Sunday, May 21st @ 9am
